Noni... Indian Mulberry (Morinda citrifolia L.) Noni - Indischer Maulbeerstrauch

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, January 31, 2011

Tropical Plants from El Portillo, Samana D.R.
Tropische Pflanzen aus El Portillo, Samana D.R.

Morinda citrifolia, commonly known as great morinda, Indian mulberry, nunaakai (Tamil Nadu, India) , dog dumpling (Barbados), mengkudu (Indonesia and Malaysia), Kumudu (Balinese), pace (Javanese), beach mulberry, cheese fruit or noni (from Hawaiian) is a tree in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. Morinda citrifolia is native from Southeast Asia to Australia and is now distributed throughout the tropics.

Noni has been evaluated unsuccessfully in preliminary clinical trials for possible use in treating cancer, although the US National Cancer Institute has undertaken further preliminary studies
for potential preventive effects against breast cancer.
Since 2007, there have been no other registered clinical trials on potential health benefits or anti-disease effects of noni which remains scientifically undefined for any effect on human health.
 Traditional medicine:
The green fruit, leaves and the root/rhizome were traditionally used to treat menstrual cramps, bowel irregularities, used to treat diabetes, liver diseases and urinary tract infections.
**********

L’AGENTE DELLE CASE PREFABBRICATE

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, January 31, 2011

More Glass and, of course, Dale Chihuly.

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, January 31, 2011

Living in the Seattle area, it can't go without mention that Dale Chihuly is the most successful Northwest artist in history. The Queen of England, Bill Clinton, Elton John, Mick Jagger and Bill Gates own his glass.  It can be seen in 225 museums around the world. He now wears an eye patch due to a crash one rainy night in England where he blinded his left eye and nearly died. Three years later he dislocated his shoulder and consequently no longer blows glass. He has since amassed a fortune and built an entire comtemporary glass art market.

In the penthouse at 60 Warren Street in New York City, a Dale Chihuly chandelier hangs in front of a 24-foot two-story window.  Natural light floods in to illuminate it, along with the Jason Brooks painting and a 1,300 Antony Gormley sculpture.

A detail from Dale Chihuly's Persian Pergola shows the artist's propensity for massing glass components of varying sizes and shapes.

Hardware is often referred to as the "jewelry of the home". It can be a powerful design tool. Tracy Glover has come up with these fabulous drawer knobs made from hand-blown glass. The vivid shades are reminiscent of the colors so often used by Dale Chihuly.

list a suggested recipe for each.
Here are Sharon’s recipes to fragrance her days:

Warm Modernism

We love the modern look, escpecially when it's cozy and livable.  No one does it better than Marcel Wolterinck, a Dutch designer. His interiors have a really organic feel to them. We love his use of textures and natural materials to bring the inside/outside together. Here' s some images for your viewing pleasure....To see more of his portfolio or buy his books, check out the web site here.

Bedroom Interior Design

A month by month plan to get your home storage organized

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, January 31, 2011

Better Homes and Gardens released this storage organization guide recently and I thought it'd be a good thing to share. I should have posted it early, and from now on I'll post each month's schedule withing the first week of the month. To read the whole storage plan on BHG, click here.

January is all about the home office. Here is what they suggest doing:

•Create a Mail Station. Set up mailboxes on a desk, wall, or bulletin board. Or give each member of your family his or her own labeled box, bin, or slot.

•Stay on Schedule. Hang a large monthly calendar in a spot everyone can see and use it. Choose a paper calendar or dry-erase version, and encourage everyone to write important events, deadlines, and reminders.

•Organize Office Supplies. Outfit a desk drawer near your main working area with a divided tray or multiple small bins. Limit the number of office supplies in each compartment. Label each compartment with an adhesive label.

•Get Rid of Junk. Test all writing utensils. Toss everything that doesn't work perfectly. Group similar items (pens, pencils, markers, etc) in canisters for easy access.

Of course, you can always go way more in detail, but I think their suggestions are a nice starting point.

I adore this choclate office, and I'm a huge fan of baskets.

The Color White

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, January 31, 2011

Is White a color?
It depends on whom you ask.
Google it and you will see what I mean.

I found an article entitled "Colors That Go With White."
Seriously?

I suspect it is a long article, much longer than its sister piece,
"Colors That Do Not Go With White."

In our part of the world, white is about all we see these days.
This week's snowscape at That Old House:

Last year's landscape . . . looks eerily familiar:
I'm seeing a pattern here.

But last winter saw some lovely whites inside as well.

And last June saw similar whites outside That Old House.

 This white, below, is missing.
Gone AWOL.
It's a matelasse spread I took to the beach house last year, and now can't find there, or here.
Bummer.
If white is truly the absence of all color, maybe this nice Peacock Alley spread just simply disappeared.

White shows up unexpectedly,
like in a sheaf of old papers stuffed into the dining room breakfront
that turn out to be the loose pages of a recipe notebook I compiled almost 30 years ago.
At least it proves that B.C. (Before Children), I used to actually cook.
And used a manual typewriter.  How quaint!

And I cannot write about whites without mentioning
Patty, Maxine and LaVerne, my big white ironstone pitcher gals.
A mix of gifts and thrifts, like most of what's here.

Some scientists or physicists would have us believe that white is the presence of all color.
Most artists and chemists would say nay -- it is the absence of all color.

Me?  I'm simple.  White's a color.  There.  Finis.
Why?  Because I said so.
If you can print it on a can of Benjamin Moore, it's a color.

I'll be at a place with lots of white, later today.
My dear Dad is back in the hospital, brought in yesterday,
just exactly one week after his last ER trip.
Your good thoughts are asked, and appreciated. -- Cass

Miss Mary at Little Red House is our hostess for
Mosaic Monday.  Clicketh thee here!

Yes, in the Northeast we are getting white-weary; we are not used to this much snow, this often.
But our last snowfall brought a brilliant gift; it is the most glittery snow I have ever seen.
It's like Martha Stewart glass glitter was spilled everywhere.
I just can't get a good picture of it!
