Formex - Young Designers

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, January 23, 2012

As I said yesterday, I think the Young Designers area is one of the most interesting parts at Formex. Here comes a few pictures of design and designers that caught my eye in this part of the exhibition.
(I wonder though why there aren't any young designers from the other Scandinavian countries (apart from Sweden), since Formex is a fair for Nordic design? Just a little reflection...)

Ersa of Sweden presented, among other things, a lovely bookshelf and a pendant lamp in copper that comes in a flat sheet to fold yourself...

Formex - mes 5 favoris

Posted by MAKMU ta On Sunday, January 22, 2012

Generally speaking, I think there were less surprises and big wow's at this edition of Formex than at the previous one. The trend exhibition by Synnöve Mork (see my last post) was a highlight, as well as the "Young Designers" area. But before talking about those young promising designers, here are my 5 faves from the rest of the exhibition. Because obviously, there still were some products and designers that stood out!

I wasn't the only one who fell for the beautiful collection in porcelain from Finnsdottir Design. Thora Finnsdottir is an Icelandic-born ceramist and designer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Boxes, lamps, vases, jewellery - I loved everything!

You'll find Ylva Skarp's beautiful handwriting on anything from wood, textile, paper, ceramics, leather... even the flooring in her exhibition stand was decorated by her lovely calligraphy. I especially like the new collection of prints like "Curiosity" and "Personality", poetic and graphic at the same time.

Cult Design showed lovely retro inspired tables with integrated plant (just as retro inspired by the way). My favourite is the one in wood.

Tove Adman presented new nice products in concrete for the office as well as new lamp holders in concrete and wood. Simple and beautiful with a coloured textile cable.

I love the geometric shapes on the ceramics by Camilla Engdahl, Melltorp Krukmakeri. And I can easily imagine at least half a dozen places in my home where the big pots (top left on the first photo) would fit.

Formex Jan 2012

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, January 20, 2012

Yesterday I visited Formex in Stockholm, the biggest Nordic design fair! It was an intense day, filled with impressions, interesting presentations and great encounters with other bloggers. The theme this year is "In the mood for a new season". The photos below are from the trend exhibition which once again was created by the very talented Synnöve Mork. The visiteur is invited into a modern architectural barn, where light, volume, feelings and sensuality are in focus.
I'm still in Stockholm today and have a limited internet access, but as soon as I'm back in France again tomorrow I'll share more impressions with you!

Tendances 2012 - 2ème partie

Trends 2012 - 2nd part

CUIVRE & LAITON / COPPER & BRASS

2012 is shiny! Any metal will do, but preferably copper and brass. Beautiful metals that also take on a  beautiful patina over the years. To be used in small touches: a lamp, a candleholder or perhaps a Scandinavia-shaped trivet...

COULEURS PASTELLES / PASTEL COLOURS

We will see more pastel colours this year, especially in more "dirty" shades. Soft colours that add a poetic, airy and dreamy look to your home. Cosy without being overdone, colorful without being overwhelming.

Mon hotel très design

Posted by MAKMU ta On Sunday, September 18, 2011

I haven't yet told you about this fantastic design hotel where I stayed during my trip to Stockholm and Formex: Clarion Hotel Sign. The spectacular building was created by Swedish architect Gert Wingårdh and each room and all the common areas are furnished with Nordic design icons created by Arne Jacobsen, Hans J Wegner, Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, Norway Says, Poul Kjaerholm and a few more... The hotel is also filled with beautiful photo art in black&white by Scandinavian photographers.

The headboards with prints of motifs from nature have been designed especially for the hotel by Danish brand Montana. Here are a few photos from my room taken in a hurry with Instagram...

I didn't have the possibility to try out the hotel's well-known restaurant, Aquavit Grill & Raw Bar, created by the chef Marcus Samuelsson, but at least we had the pleasure to have dinner with him on this occasion... Unfortunately I didn't have time either to test the spa on the top floor, although this whole area looked extremely tempting! On the other hand, I fully enjoyed the breakfast buffet which was huge and divine!

Monica Förster design studio

Posted by MAKMU ta On Thursday, September 08, 2011

Monica Förster is not only an extremely talented designer, she also appeared to be an extremely nice person. She is the designer I hinted about the other day and that I was so pleased to meet last week in Stockholm! A very interesting visit to her studio in the afternoon and a just as pleasant discussion at the table in the evening at this dinner.
(All photos below are taken by me in her studio)

 Monica was
born in Stockhom but grew up in the northern parts of Sweden where her parents ran a famous hotel-restaurant in the town of Dorotea. Her latest project, a new cutlery series in stainless steel for Gense, has allowed her to renew with this interest for the meal and the set table that has characterized her childhood. The collection, called Dorotea, combines this Swedish producer's 150 years of tradition and craftmanship with Monica's modern international design.

The tablecloth on the work table in the studio shows how the project and the cutlery series developed. The interaction with the fork, the knife and the spoon was an important part of the design process in the way that the drawing on the photo below shows. The little characters on the table represent Monica and her very international team, each one with their own personnality. Monica told us, with a smile, that the one to the right, looking ahead and pointing her finger at the team, is her...

The Florinda chair and the beautiful Cirle lamp were designed by Monica for De Padova in Italy.

Monica has a degree from both Beckmans and Konstfack, two of Sweden's main design schools, but her first steps in the world of design were however not that obvious. Although her talent was acknowledged, her design was considered so quaint that the producers did not really see how she could contribute to their company... After all, at a time when you were expected to present something like a high quality wooden table as your graduate work, Monica came up with a photo-luminescent toilet seat... So when she didn't find an employer to hire her, she saw no other solution than to go into business by herself, which seems to have been a good idea!

Today Monica works on an international level with companies such as Cappellini, Poltrona Frau, De Padova, Tacchini, Svenskt Tenn, Offecct, Swedese, Design House Stockholm, Gärsnäs, Zero... and many more.  She has also been  awarded Designer of the year in Sweden in 2006 and 2007, Design plus in Germany, been featured in the International Design Yearbook, just to name a few...

Monicas's design is characterized by pure lines and a never-ending curiosity for new materials and technologies.

The vases in black crystal on the top of the shelf are inspired by fashion: T-shirt, turtle neck, v-neck (limited edition produced by Skruf), and at the bottom right, behind one of the tables from the Sun, Cake, Dot collection (for Nola), you will find Forest (for Modus), the artificial forest for people like me, who like nature but forget to water their plants...

I love the simplicity of the wall shelf Flying Rings, designed for Gärsnäs.
