A Lady's Dressing Table

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, September 20, 2010 No comments

‘My lady’s dressing-table, with its dainty-cover and array of bright silver and pretty china or glass, is generally the first object on which the eye falls when entering her room. However much or however little may be spent on both table and accessories it may always be a pretty sight.’ Lillian Joy wrote in Every Woman’s Encyclopedia.

I think a dressing-table is a lovely part of a woman’s bedroom. A setting for her to care for herself and to prepare herself for the day.

I love the attention to detail in the choice of table and accessories making each lady’s table unique.

The table can be of fine wood or daintily skirted in a very old fashioned way.

Lillian recommends the convenience of a stool over a chair. At the moment I have a lovely little chair, but I am reconsidering my options.

The accessories can include a lovely brush, comb and mirror set of either gold-tone or silver, which can include a ‘delightful powder- puff box’.

Lillian adds that a beautiful lady’s table can be decorated with lovely glass or china as well as a potted plant.

A lovely lady’s table combines the useful and the ornamental.

Brush sets can vary from the very fine gold to ivory.

A beautiful dressing table tray can be made of English cut glass or pottery. ‘

'Then there are the vases…and pomade pots for cold cream’. ‘Large scented bottles are an improvement on any table’.

With all the beauty Lillian also recognized the functionality of good lighting.

As I read this charming article I thought of the things I chose to include on and in my dressing table making it beautiful and practical for me.

My dressing table was an old dresser that was missing some of its veneer. I decided a little French influence would be nice.

I marbleized the top with shades of peach, painted the sides a cream color and blue, then painted flowers and scrollwork.

The accessories I include on my dressing table are a painted wooden tray filled with my silver brush set

and a glass and pewter powder shakers.

I have included a pink ceramic tray to hold my collection of beautifully bottled fragrances. I love having fresh flowers and candles too.

Thank you for stopping by! I always appreciate your visits.
