A Triscuit Gives Its All

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, October 08, 2010 No comments

When our new conservatory carpeting was installed last week,
it reminded me of something.

I asked you yesterday if you could tell what that something is.
If you answered, "A giant Triscuit," then you are right.

Today, in the lovely morning light, I took a real Triscuit -- which is a woven whole wheat cracker --
from the cupboard, and put it on the carpet to take a picture of it.
As I was about to snap, I saw this through the viewfinder:

 A big ol' spaniel head.
A different camera angle showed this -- spaniel chomping Triscuit.
Num num num num nummmm . . . All gone!
Dion is sniffing for more goodies, but I won't be fooled again.
I held Dion's collar with one hand, and snapped this shot hurriedly with my other.
Look at the carpet below; except for color, doesn't it really look like a giant Triscuit?

Dion is just sure there must be more crackers . . . .

Poor doggie.

Guess what I have in my hot little hands?
The wallpaper for the kitchen!
Ya-hoo.
Mr. UPS tossed it up on the porch yesterday.

A few years ago, I bought this big soft-cover book:
And in this book, I found this kitchen:

To me, it looks vintage, with a wonderful and unexpected mix of formal and rustic;
I've kept it in my mind as my kitchen makeover inspiration.

I wanted a similar look for our kitchen -- something timeless,
that would look as if, like Topsy, it just growed.

Also, something cheap.  There are too many other things needing attention
in a 178-year old house to spend tens of thousands on a kitchen!

Since last November, we've been chiseling away at the 1980s style kitchen we inherited from the previous owners, who had renovated it in 2004.  It's hard to change such a relatively new kitchen, but we had to.  Just before Thanksgiving 2009 we had soapstone countertops, new sink, and new cooktop installed.  Here!  Last spring, we re-jiggered some base cabinets, added a hutch top, pulled out the black paint, and made a faux-Welsh-dresser thingy.  Here!

Now it's time to tackle walls and cabinets and hardware and maybe a light fixture or two. . .
and with any luck, we'll have a kitchen that looks a little like this:

but even more like itself come the holidays.

Meanwhile, I can't find the lemon I need for my lunchtime iced tea.
Where could it be?

I have plenty of faux lemons; this glass beaker is full of them . . .

But
where the heck is that real lemon?
