awoke to a pink sky this morning. I told my husband, ‘it is going to rain’. He said how do you know.
In my mind, I thought, ‘my father told me so’.
My father was a sailor and taught me the rhyme, ‘red sky at night-sailor’s delight—red sky in the morning, sailor take warning.
I later found that this is a very old English rhyme that is also associated with shepherds with the same words. Shepherds knew that if the morning sky was red, they would need to shelter their sheep.
The beauty of it is that while the sun is low on the horizon, the sun’s rays pass through more atmosphere and the red/orange of the spectrum of the sky is more dense than the more scattered of the blue/violet end. I guess in a sense – there is always a rainbow of color in the sky. When the sun’s rays pass through the morning clouds-we see them as red or pink – usually our rainy weather comes from the West. If the sky is red or pink in the evening- the clouds have passed by and are on their way.
There is also an ancient reference to this rhyme and knowledge in the Wyclif Bible, “"The eeuenynge maad, ye seien, It shal be cleer, for the heuene is lijk to reed; and the morwe, To day tempest, for heuen shyneth heuy, or sorwful."
Translated means:
"When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and louring."
So, this morning, before the rain came, I strolled through the garden taking in the beauty of the waning colors of the season. As fallen leaves crunch beneath my steps I view wild violets in our grass. There are a lot of wild things growing in our garden.
Berries everywhere, God’s provision for the birds.
Amazing color coming from our cypress tree and burning bush.
The La Marne rose seems to prefer this time of year giving us such a beautiful display of dainty pink flowers.
This pink rose is giving its last for us too.
I love the deep red in the coloring if this diminutive rose.
Did I appreciate all the beauty I had throughout the year. I feel a longing for more of their beauty knowing it will be several months before I see them again.
But, at the same time I feel a deep appreciation for the changes in the season – giving rest and renewed energy to my treasures in the garden. Everything and everyone needs a time of rest.
These things I ponder as I enjoy a lovely, warm cup of lemon ginseng tea. I have been fed visually this morning by the beauty that surrounds me and nourished by the gift of tea.
