Comment on my blog...
Nice writeup, however, the species in the photographs is Artocarpus camansi, or breadnut, the ancestor of breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis. A. camansi is native to New Guinea and possibly the Philippines and Indo-Mayasia region. It was distributed to the Caribbean and other countries by the French in the late 1700s.
It is grown for its seeds, similar to chestnut in flavor and texture. Immature fruit are sliced and cooked as a vegetable.

Breadnut is considered to be the wild ancestor of breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis. It is mainly native to New Guinea and possibly the Moluccas and the Philippines.
Currently besides its native range, the breadnut is also grown outside of in the Caribbean, South and Central America, and West Africa.
Description:
The trees grow to be 10-15 m high, with a trunk 1 m in diameter. When compared to Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) and Dugdug (Artocarpus mariannensis), breadnut has more open branching structure. The same tree has both male and female flowers and the male inflorescence appears first. Please visit  the National Tropical Gardens Island of  Hawaii to read more about this very important food source. Many recipes are available on the internet.

The world’s largest collection of breadfruit varieties has been established by botanist Diane Ragone, from over 20 years' travel to 50 Pacific islands, on a 10-acre (40,000 m2) plot outside of Hana, Hawaiian Island, on the isolated east coast of Maui.

Just returned shopping from our local Walmart store.
Yes, I shop on Sunday because all our stores are open.
I was quite surprised to see breadnut for sale in the vegetable isle.
The fruit looked not so fresh anymore. The sales clerk assured me, that a new shipment will arrive soon. I am definitively will try one of the recipes I bookmarked. Perhaps one of my readers has a special recipe to share??

You never know what you find at Walmart...
