{Design Project} Bay Area Family Search

Posted by MAKMU ta On Thursday, March 08, 2012

As a way to expand my portfolio, I'm on the search for a family living in the Bay Area, California this summer, who would be willing to let me design a room in their home. If you're looking for design help in your home and live in the SF Bay Area, I'm looking for you!

Here are the details:
- I would help you design a room in your home from start to finish
- Design services would be free!
- You just need to be willing to complete the design {and have a reasonable budget!}
- You must give permission for photos to be taken of the space and used in my portfolio and on the blog
- BONUS if you think your style reflects mine :)

If you are interested in this, please email me with:
- The room you would like to redesign
-A picture of the space
- A little about you {ie. where in the Bay Area you live}

Please spread the word! I can't wait to see who emails me and get started on the project :) Feel free to check out my Projects Gallery for past design projects, inspiration boards, and client rooms.

Have the best Thursday! Back tomorrow with a new design plan for my bedroom back home...can't wait to show you.

Star Struck: Mary McDonald

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, September 23, 2011

Last week I was fortunate enough to be Cristin's date to the San Francisco Design Center to meet a very special someone.  Did you watch last season of Million Dollar Decorators?? Cristin and I both did and loved every second. You may remember who my favorite designer on the show was from this post I wrote.  If you didn't catch it, my fave is Mary McDonald!  She's an absolutely wonderful designer with so much personality, pattern, texture, and drama in each space.  When Cristin told me she was doing a book signing at the SF Design Center, I was thrilled!

I was over the moon excited to meet Mary, and also to finally get my own copy of her book- which is amazing!

If you haven't grabbed a copy of Mary McDonald Interiors, you have to get one soon! The way Mary lays out each style and compiles her portfolio under each topic is so helpful to many different types of people. Whether you're looking for direction, eye candy, or inspiration, this is the book for you!

Thanks, Mary, for spending time and chatting with us! You're fab (:
Happy Weekend, friends!!

Field Trip + Decorate!

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, August 29, 2011

Last Thursday, Cristin {from Simplified Bee}, took me to the San Francisco Design Center on a little field trip before we met up at Anthropologie for Holly's Decorate book tour signing.

Touring the design center was a great opportunity. I feel like I was able to grasp how to make my way around, how to interact with showroom associates, and learned what an important asset living near a design center really is. By knowing how to utilize a design center near me, I'll be able to offer my clients many more options, looks and more beautiful interiors.

First stop, Duralee...

Martyn Lawrence Bullard's new line was out and we were loving it! Check out this fun ikat print...I was so smitten that I ordered a sample. Maybe I can make a bulletin board with it (:

After we explored there, we headed to dinner at Straits, which was FAB! See...we scarfed it down (:

Then we walked to Anthropologie. Clearly I'm always a happy camper in that store, but Thursday night was even better than usual, as Holly Becker of Decor8 blog and the author of Decorate, was there doing a book signing!

Holly is darling and just so sweet. I loved how excited she was that I was going to school for design. Great encouragement (:

Also a highlight was seeing some familiar faces.  Crystal and Anne from Rue Magazine were there, as well as Caitlin from Sacramento Street. Love all those talented girls!

What a fun night. And what a wonderful design book. Thanks to Holly for writing, sharing, inspiring and visiting us all the way out in California.
In case you haven't picked up your copy yet, here's what you're missing!

Love this quote from the one and only, Nate Berkus...

Agreed! It's important to remember that everyone has a different design recipe to create a home they want to eat all up.  If you fill it with things you adore, you're well on your way!

Huge thanks to Anna from In Honor of Design for hosting a giveaway of Holly's book. I won the book a month ago and went through it the day I got it (:

Revisiting this little trip to the city certainly made my Monday sweeter. Have a wonderful start to your week and know I'm praying for all you East Coasters!

To San Franny We Go

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, August 19, 2011

This post is WAYYY overdue...but better late than never (:

A few weeks ago we had our SF design blogger meet up and I was able to meet one of my blogging (and now real life!) BFF's, Michelle from Ten June.  The weekend following the meet up, I drove back to the city to meet up with Michelle and her adorable sister, Tori, to do some city things.

First stop, the Farmer's Market!

Amazebuns....that's right (;

Anddd it was immediately devoured...

Next we headed to Jonathan Adler for some inspiration:

Then we took a ride around some beautiful neighborhoods. I made Michelle snap these as I was driving.

Yes, that is one house...one house, people!

Tori said she wanted to drive up and down Lombard street, and as their driver for the day, I took the challenge!

Why use the word challenge, you ask? Picture so much traffic on the steepest hill of your life, that you're literally laying down in your car while continuing to stop and go every 30 seconds or so. I will compare it to being on the "ch ch ch ch ch" upward part of a roller coaster.
I won't lie...my palms were sweating!
10 and 2...Just like my daddy taught me (:

I sense fear in those smiles!

View from the top of Lombard street...worth it!

We made it down Lombard and back to the hotel safely. What a fun day in the city it was! Great friends, yummy food, beautiful houses and views, and my newfound promise to never make fun of online dating.  Why? Because bloggers establish meaningful relationships, eventually go on blates {blogger dates!} and totally hit it off. Bam. Dontcha agree??

Happy, happy Friday!

PS. Welcome to my newest sponsor, Ashley, from Adventures of Newlyweds!
She's spunky, loves catch-phrase and is a self-proclaimed "foodie"...hehe, aren't we all?!
Oh, she's also drop dead gorgeous.
Go say hello (:

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Posted by MAKMU ta On Tuesday, September 07, 2010

Going to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has been on my Summer To-Do list for a while now.  And with only 3 weeks left before heading back to Seattle, we planned the trip.  It's so great to only live 45 minutes south of San Francisco...it makes it easy to get to Giants games and make fun trips to the city during the holidays.  The museum is so incredible.  It's crazy to have taken an art history course last quarter where I learned (& memorized) a multitude of famous paintings and then walk in the museum, only to see them hanging on the wall.  Seeing them on the wall makes my professor's (who I loved!) description of them so much more real.  I could finally see the epic proportion of Mark Rothko's famous painting done in 1960:

The actual size I'm not quite sure of, all I know is it's HUGE.  Probably around 20-25 feet tall.  I love the inspiration behind this painting.  He was inspired by a poem by J.D. Neilson and the last line reads "Life is simple and messy and pure".  I feel the emotion of this line is the essence of the painting.  It's simple to the eye, with only 3 pure colors, but at the same time, the edges are messy.  Don't you kind of feel like that statement sums up your life sometimes?

Here were some other favorites:

Matisse's Woman with a Hat, 1905.  This was a truly a controversial painting, because no one had ever portrayed a woman, much less Matisse's wife, in this bright of a palette before.

Picasso's Jug of Flowers, 1937.

Mondrain's abstract oil paintings, 1935-42.
I love how this painting is so simple, but yet a lot of thought went into it.  He was known for his paintings being well proportioned.  It takes a few stripes of red and blue to balance the amount of yellow in the top right corner.  Having the colors at opposite sides of the canvas also achieves that.  Although the stripes are larger on the right side, the thicker lines of the stripes on the left side also balances the canvas.

I also really enjoyed this:

A velvet cake with chocolate ganache filling in the shape of Mondrain's painting.  So delicious!

They also had some really neat chairs, entirely made of wood.

And I'll end with what reminds me of any interior designer's color swatches:

I'm so glad I was able to go to the SFMOMA yesterday. It was a great experience and even someone who's not as into art/design can appreciate it! (My mom and dad came also, and totally loved it.)  It just makes you into a more well-rounded person, because behind the paint is a person.  And that person made history.

Love and Simple, Messy, & Pure,
