Cushions Of New Decor

Posted by MAKMU ta On Saturday, September 10, 2011

Complementary citrus and green give a fresh look. Rattan and wooden Thomas Dare furniture and Crucial Trading sisal carpet create a summery feel, while voiles bleach out the windows and bathe the room in light. Shutters give extra privacy and control. The glass-topped table reflects light, enhancing the space. Spiky plants give architectural interest and echo the cushion print.

Patterned purple wallpaper teamed with an antique-style mirror creates a focal point out of the fireplace in this dramatic living room. The purple of the walls is mirrored in a rich aubergine rug and ottoman. An opulent combination of rich fig shades and glistening silver accessories creates a grown-up living space.

Green and red furniture and accessories provide colourful accents in this living room. The bold print shade ties into the scheme, repeating its colours and cushions. The dark grey walls and white flooring creates a soft and subtle backdrop

Bold red makes a statement against fresh green walls in this living room. Faux fur cushions and a textured rug keep the look cosy, while a glass coffee table creates a feeling of space, and its similarity to the dining table links the open-plan areas together.

A neutral colour palette of dusky pinks and greys creates an informal yet sophisticated look in this living room. A modular sofa is perfect for family to sit together, and upholstery in a darker colour like grey is ideal for hiding stains. Multifunctional furniture is key. For instance, the footstools can also be used as chairs or as storage boxes for magazines.

Give a traditional living room scheme a contemporary twist with super-sized and super-bright florals on the walls. Here, drops of patterned wallpaper are combined with drops of plain to create a bespoke effect. Neutral floors maintain a traditional look, while hits of punchy colour are added for a scheme that’s modern yet timeless.

Mustard florals and dark wood furniture, and matching flooring, create a Fifties-style look in this living room. The floral print on unlined curtains is emphasised by daylight shining through, in a scheme where different floral fabrics work together due to a common colour palette

Star struck...again!

If I were to put every single star thing in our house (with a star shape or star pattern) in one pile, I would beat Jack and his weedy little Beanstalk in one swift starry swoop. I do not know what it is about stars, but I find them irresistibly yummy!

In this picture, I have gathered a few of the star cushions I have made in recent years for the Swenglish home. (The picnic blanket is a bargain find from - I think - Rusta in Sweden a few years ago.) Oh, and a LOVE cushion snuck into the picture as well, entrance granted because of its matching colours... The cushions are all made with a mix of new fabrics and recycled ones, for example my old denim skirt, a red/beige-stripy top my son grew out of, a checked dress, etc.

Like some of the old fabrics above, I hope today you will feel invigorated with new life, and that the day leaves you with a sprinkling of star dust!

My new cushion and I...

Without some of the gorgeous Swedish blogs I frequent, I would not know that H&M (Hennes&Mauritz) have launched a Home section. Without some of my fellow bloggers, I would not have seen this gorgeous linen cushion with the Petunia writing. Without my blog sisters, I would not have been able to fish out this new textile friend from the parcel my parents brought with them from Sweden two days ago, hug it gently and introduce it to its new cushioned community.

I have got a strong feeling we are going to become very good friends, my Petunia cushion and I.

Welcome to the family.

A night in with the grandparents...

A popular trend in the shabby chic-inspired homes in Sweden is to copy a vintage image of, for example, angels or madonnas onto linen cushions. I decided to invite my grandparents instead.

Using the easy iron-on technique, my maternal ancestors were easily positioned on some thick linen fabric, and without any fuss then placed gently in my favourite armchair. Nestled there with a faux fur throw, they seem to enjoy being part of the everyday hustle and bustle of family life, with their great-grandchildren occasionally standing on their heads on top of them. Occupational hazard, I suppose, being sat on if you happen to have turned into a cushion in your old age.

Lisa and Helmer were not around long enough to meet their great-grandchildren, but somehow I think they are enjoying their cushioned presence in their lives now. At least I know I do.
