A Return to Loveliness

Cinderella Days

October days become magical leaving us ‘as dazzled as Cinderella when her pumpkin swept her off to the ball’. In a fairytale like manner, the October 1997 Victoria Magazine delighted us in tales
of ‘apples becoming jewels in the hands of imaginative cooks, flea market finds turn into decorative delights, and a garden blossoms gloriously when others are waning’.

I marvel at each October morning as myriads of butterflies flutter to the still-blooming butterfly bushes, daisies, asters and mums color gardens like old-timey quilts, clear-blue skies sparkle above golden and amber trees.

The air is filled with expectation and delight, as beautifully told by Robert Frost in his poem, October.

O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow's wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
Tomorrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow.
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know.
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away.
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes' sake, if the were all,
Whose elaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost--
For the grapes' sake along the all.
Robert Frost

The magic of in-between – no longer summer and not quite winter – the Autumnal days of October fill us with child-like wonder.

I hope you cherish each frosty morning and bright-lit day into starry night as I do.

My Shabby Chic Travels...Lake District Cumbria

Posted by MAKMU ta On Thursday, August 04, 2011

 I just returned from one of my six yearly visits to family in the Lake District UK. Whilst there the thought occurred to me to share some photos of shabby chic-ness I think you might like! The above is a typical house in the village of Beetham which is where my mother works.

 This is Beetham Post Office - you would love it, the whole village is chocolate box perfect.

 Most of my family members live in a small market town called Ulverston. It has cobbled streets, daily markets, an old town clock that chimes every hour and all the major times inbetween, weekly festivals...this is an example of one shabby shop there called Brambles.

 Beetham Post Office have a nice line of handmade fairies hanging in the window...

 I cheekily took some photos....

One of my favourite Ulverston tea rooms...there are plenty...is Gillams. If you want to see more Beetham and Ulverston photos they are available in my Flickr.
