Faded and beautiful

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, March 23, 2012

I must be needing soft lighting and relaxed spaces right now as that seems to be what I am most drawn to.

We have another busy weekend planned - how about you?  Any time to relax and take in the beautiful weather?

I am wishing!  I have just recieved my copy of Steven Gambrel's new book which I cannot wait to dig into!

Design Inspiration right now...

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, February 27, 2012

So I am curious... where do you find your design inspiration?  I am hearing whispers that the blogs are taking a backseat to Pinterest ...  What do you think?

You know I love me some Pinterest around here but really I find that photos that are arranged in a post with some text are equally inspiring and it is always nice to see some new photos that seem to come only from blogs and other sites.. and the interaction is so much fun!

Just checking - which way are you going?

Mirror collages...

Posted by MAKMU ta On Saturday, January 14, 2012

So I have been struggling with an idea for my dining room for over a year now I think... I just could not decide what it was that I wanted to do.  I have this weird window that makes the wall kind of hard to decorate.  I have debated over vintage doors, vintage mirrors, starburst mirrors all kinds of art and I just could not commit to any one thing.  So it finally has come to an end- I needed to fix it and then things just seem to fall into line.  It's always so nice when that happens.  I found this picture on Pinterest the other day and fell deeply in love!

I painted the walls in there Restoration Hardware Slate which I LOVE but the mirror I picked was just not doing it for me.  So I think I am going to give the vintage mirror/frame collage idea a go.  I originally had a reclaimed wood mirror collage.   So the clincher was when I received an email from a reader who owns a company that makes beautiful antiqued mirrors (which I have been searching for someone for a long time).  Leftbank Collection makes all types of antiqued mirrors which is perfection for this little project of mine as I can vary the style of the mirrors so they look collected over time and I can fit them to some vintage frames too.

I have always wanted to do this somewhere.. now I just have to find the right spot!

I love love the plain jane mirror here... so me!  I will definitely need to use one of these.

I am so excited!!!  I am going to see what I can find at the flea market over the next few months and fill in from there.

guest quarters

Posted by MAKMU ta On Saturday, November 19, 2011

We have guests this weekend, and while I wish the guest room looked like this it might be TOO comfortable - if you know what I mean.  This is so subtle and inviting with the soft layers of grey, linen and white.
Are you having guests for the holidays?  How do you welcome your guests?

I always try to get the house to a normal level of cleanliness and fluff the pillows.  I typically spray the sheets with lavender water and  put fresh fluffy towels in the guest bath.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Vintage Guilded mirror..

Posted by MAKMU ta On Wednesday, October 19, 2011

I cannot believe it is Wednesday already!  Another week disappearing right before my eyes...
The bathroom remodel is well underway and I am getting excited!  Tile comes in at the end of the week and will be installed next week.  I remember when I started all of this I wanted to have a gorgeous gilded mirror like this for over the sinks.  Alas, it will not be that way but I have a few fun things up my sleeve to make it just so.

Mirrors Antiques

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, October 07, 2011

Description
Mirror in Kilim frame hand-decorated by an old hippie with bone, teeth, heishi beads and tassels. The kilim was originally a rug in poor condition so the best pieces were used for mirrors, seat coverings and other miscellaneous furniture. This mirror is about 25 years old.

Mirror with frame made from an antique Kilim rug. This mirror is extremely heavy and has a hidden light (see image below).

Description
Antique French ornate gilt mirror in fantastic original condition. France circa 1890

Description
Breathtaking antique French faux-bois mirror with all the original glass and decorated with bird, leaves, and grapes, all in untouched original condition. The hand-carved details are extremely realistic, you have to touch it to beieve it. Mirrors such as this are few and far between. France circa 1850

Description
Hand-carved antique French mirror in gilded gesso over wood frame with wonderful patina throughout. The soot marks still remain from the many years it most certainly stood over a coal burning fireplace and we chose to leave it this way. The condition is excellent; there has been some minor restoration and there is a leaf missing from the pediment. France circa 1920

so blue...

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, October 03, 2011

Fall seems like the perfect time to bring on the blues...  the dark warm colors that are so beautiful.

I have a busy start to the week with meetings and installations, looking forward to completing some things though!!!  It is hard when projects stretch on for months and then when they finally come to a close there is a sense of accomplishment.  Sometimes it feels like you are letting go of a friend you have been spending a lot of time with.

What do you have in store for the week?

Style in the entry

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, September 26, 2011

Another week is upon us and I am not sure I feel like I am accomplishing much around here.
I am complete in awe of the this beautiful entryway and the mirror, it is so very lovely and unique, the things that make a house a home.

There is a lot going on around here and I am wondering something.. as I start to do some long awaited work on our home, if you are interested in seeing the changes taking place?  I have not really explored that here on the blog as it has been a lot of inspiration and work ideas.  I am just curious if you, my lovely reader, are interested in this type of addition.

Also, this week look for a little giveaway here and some other fun things!

Wishing you a lovely Monday to start off the week.

Grey in the entryway...

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, September 16, 2011

How yummy is all of that moulding and the bike is very sweet too!!

Sometimes I wish that I lived in a big city so that I could ride my bike around and then store it in my beautifully detailed entryway.. but then I come back to reality and I live here...

More Vintage & Shabby Chic Apartment Decor

Posted by MAKMU ta On Sunday, August 28, 2011

I take no prisoners when it comes to decor ideas I love. I want to have implemented them all, like, yesterday! One idea I love is to arrange the clutter and collections people have and display them in a way that does not interfere in everyday life like this fantastic mirror display above.

Ever lived in a studio apartment? Hard isn't it? I lived in one with my daughter until she was 13 months old - it didn't look like this one, nowhere near! Basically this is one room living designed and decorated to perfection. Plenty of windows and light help!

Having looked around recently I am getting a vibe for vertical striped walls. There are papers like this everywhere at the moment. I am not usually a wallpaper fan but I could be converted!

I chose this last photo because it reminds me of my current flat. Two large windows in the very tall living room, neutral colours and natural woods and not exactly very tidy! My home suffers from clutter burnout and it's now one of the battles I am addressing in exactly how to turn all those extra objects into focus pieces.

Restful retreat

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, July 29, 2011

I think that it is always great to put a little chest at your bedside if you have the space.  I like to read in bed and keep my books and stationary in mine.  This bedroom looks so restful, I really could use that right now a little R and R.  It has been a crazy week!
Have a wonderful weekend.
