A home library is not something for everyone, but if you do have an inclination towards books or even love collecting the rare ones, then this can really add immensely both to the look of your home and how people view you when they come for a visit. A home library talks about your personality, shouts about what kind of a person you are and it also ensures that those who walk in, leave with something added to their wisdom. It can make for a great topic of conversation and earn you some great new buddies.

Of course, a whole library at home looks hard to put together, but with these tips, you will find that it is not that hard as you thought.

#1 Pick the perfect room and devote the required space
The most significant aspect towards building a grand home library is to pick the right room. Obviously, preferable it should have a high ceiling along with space for racks and other accessories. You can of course, devote just a part of a certain room for this purpose, but an entire room that is totally dedicated makes it a lot more wonderful. Also make sure it’s large enough to accommodate your entire book collection and maybe the ones you are going to add in the future.

#2 Choose the type of shelves that you feel would be apt

#3 Colors, shades and usage of materials
Dark and Victorian styled colors are often used in libraries to give them a more antique feeling. The same can be done for your home library. Modern Shelving and Layouts By Tumidei

This week, website wise, why not have a little flick through the pages of http://www.tumidei.it/ . Its a bold company that offers a selection of what they call “layouts”, these are bespoke designs for whole rooms that can include shelves, mirrors, headboards and flooring.
On their website they say that what the company does is; ” Design up to the centimeter. Tubes and molds, plans and shelves, cut with the dimensions and forms you like most”.
Here is an example of one of the room layouts they have completed already


Anyone who likes bold colors will also find the website interesting because many of Tumidei’s designs rely heavily on the use of block color and big bold panels of bright colors like turquoise and magenta pink.


Much like a bespoke suit from London’s Saville Row, these rooms are unique spaces designed specifically for the buyer and are made to fit in with the persons life in a seamless and functional way.


The above room has many of Tumidei’s signature design characteristics like the under the bed table that pulls in and out or the illuminated linear shelves on the back wall. As you can see from all the images the pieces produced by the company are not only innovative but are crafted in a high quality and precise way so that every item slots into the space perfectly.

Here's a terrific way to create storage and a focal point using less than 12 inches of floor space. A wall of bookshelves stretches up to the ceiling and brackets a pair of French doors


Built-in bookcases have a sedate, cohesive look to them. These feature a cupboard unit underneath for storage of non-decorative items



Make good use of an awkward area by filling it with custom bookshelves. These span the area to the left of the fireplace, then turn the corner to fill an adjacent wall.

Dressy Shelves

For a dressy look, cut sheer fabric in a half circle and hem the edge. Using a hot glue gun, attach small silk leaves (which can be found at any fabric store) to the hem of the skirt. Drape fabric over a sconce. To finish, repeat the leafy theme by attaching the same leaves to the branches and place in a vase on the shelf.

Stacking Shelves

If one shelf is nice, several can be wonderful! Use wood blocks or accessories from old cabinets and headboards, or any pieces lying about that you find architecturally appealing. Paint them white. Invert the painted pieces and attach shelf. To add interest, trim each shelf differently, using a hot glue gun to add lace edging, teardrop crystals, antique buttons, etc.

 

Picture Frame Shelf

To use picture frames to make shelves, first screw a thin strip of wood to the wall to create

a supporting ledge for the back of the glass shelf. The picture frames form the front support. To secure the frames, attach them at an angle from the wall by threading picture wire from the back of the frames to the eyebolts secured in the wall. Make sure the shelf is level, then secure the bottom of each from to the wall with drywall screws and begin to embellish.

For glass shelves with a sea theme, use two architectural elements as the bottom glass support. Place glass shelf on top of supports. Two marble-filled jars make the upper shelf support.
