BOUGHT SIGHT UNSEEN

Posted by MAKMU ta On Tuesday, March 27, 2012

So I did something I have never done before.
I bought two chairs from an on-line estate sale.
I admired them all last week and just as the auction was about to end on Sunday afternoon,
I got into a bit of a bidding war.
You know how that is, right?
You're pretty sure you want something and then as soon as you find out others want it too, game on!
I paid a little more than I originally planned, but it was still not much.

Introducing, the twins........

I plan to have them either reupholstered or perhaps slipcovered in a linen like fabric.
I love the lines of the chairs, but I want to de-formalize them.  Is that a word, de-formalize?
Anyway, I think slipcovering them would give them the casual feel I'm looking for.

Something like this beautiful Restoration Hardware chair.

Or upholstered in a beautiful fabric, similar to this one.
I love everything Lauren Liess designs.

This is the sofa I am thinking of for our family room.
I would love to use the twins in this room as well.
However, I'm afraid they may be a tad too formal, even slipcovered, for this room.
Help a girl out.  What do you think?  Be honest, I can take it.
I still love the chairs and if I don't use them in the family room,
I tend to hang on to them until I find a place for them.

Yes, I am aware that I have a chair problem.
The twins will join the thrift store chair in the basement for now
until I decide what to do with them.
Apparently, my chair problem is bigger than I thought,
I have even resorted to naming them.  Surely there's a support group out there for this issue?

ANTIQUE THERAPY

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, February 27, 2012

Last weekend, I took a little trip to Columbus, Ohio with three girlfriends.
We stopped and had BBQ for breakfast, yes, that's right BBQ for breakfast.
After a quick pit top at the Pottery Barn Outlet, we cruised on up the road another hour and hit the Scott's Antique Market in Columbus.  I read about it on-line, but have never been so I wasn't quite sure what to expect.  Since I roped the other three into making the trip with me, I had high hopes.
We were all pleasantly surprised at the size and quality of the show.

I came home with three treasures.
First up, this eight foot long bench.  Believe it or not, I have been searching for an eight foot long bench for this spot in my kitchen. The fact that it was already painted a blue/gray color was a bonus!

This little nook has sat empty since we moved in.

The bench is right at home here.

My next find was this antique map of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky streets.
I happened upon it early in the day so I stopped, admired and then kept walking.
Later in the day, I stopped admired some more and kept walking.
After dragging all three of my friends over to give an opinion,
I stopped, opened my wallet and closed the deal.

It was already framed and I hung it with three prints of landmarks in Germany
that I picked up at a local antique store a few months ago.

My last find was this vintage roll down map.

I have always thought these things are so cool and I was ecstatic to find one at a reasonable price.
My husband and I have differing opinions on what is a reasonable price, but believe me,
it was a reasonable price!

Of course finding these treasures made my day, but getting to spend time with
three girlfriends that share my passion for antiquing truly was just the kind of therapy I needed.
Can't wait to do it again!

Inside Razzberry Bazaar in Tynemouth

Posted by MAKMU ta On Thursday, February 16, 2012

Some snaps I took inside Razzberry Bazaar - one of the more unique shopping experiences in Tynemouth. I wouldn't want to dust or stocktake in here, I don't often buy but I always look because looking is really the journey in this shop for me!

Gorgeous Little Somethings

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, November 14, 2011

Welcome our guest blogger Katie from Gorgeous Little Somethings...

"Gorgeous Little Somethings was set up thanks to my very own gorgeous little something.....my beautiful baby girl, Ava.
Becoming a mum gave me a new found confidence. So I decided to take the plunge and do what I'd not previously dared...set up my own crafted goods business.

I've always been quite creative and want my home to feel characterful and personal. That's why I love finding old unwanted pieces and up cycling them into something new or painting and decorating them to give them a new lease of life. I mix old and new to make something unique.

My range of products includes handmade cards (bespoke orders considered) and wrap, decorative accessories, wooden boxes, cushions and doorstops. I hope to expand in the near future to include shabby chic furniture, sourced and renewed by myself of course. I'm also toying with the idea of adding an 'Another Chance' section. What's that? It's all of the random and lovely pieces I pick up whilst scouring markets, second-hand shops etc for materials. Some things simply can't be or shouldn't be altered but that doesn't make it any easier to walk away instead of purchasing them. And there's a limit to my other half's tolerance of such things! So why not make them available to my lovely customers at a suitably thrifty price. Watch this space!"

OUT OF CONTROL

Posted by MAKMU ta On Tuesday, October 11, 2011

My fabric obsession is officially out of control!  I went to pick up some fabric for a new project I am working on and somehow I came home with tons of extra.  How does that happen?  I'll tell you how it happens, I see something beautiful, for a great price and I just can't seem to pass it up.

What is wrong with me??????

These are the fabrics I went to pick up. They are going to be used in a new client's bedroom.
I'm working on the design now and I hope to have it finished up by the end of the week to show you.  Aren't they pretty together?

Technically I didn't buy the fabric on the right, my friend did and it is the leftover from this project.
I did buy the striped fabric on the left.  Love the natural colors and I'm such a sucker for stripes.

I can't seem to get enough of blue and I'm crazy about this design.

I have absolutely no idea where I am going to use this, but once again,
I'm a sucker for stripes and I love the colors.

I tend to stockpile fabric like some people stockpile toilet paper.  I suppose if there were ever an emergency, we could wrap ourselves in fabric and keep warm or in an extreme emergency, it could even be used as toilet paper.  I said an extreme emergency.

If I can't seem to find a use for the extras I brought home today, I may be listing them for sale on my blog.  I may even incorporate them in a design board for some inspiration.  Stay tuned.

Anyone share my fabric obsession?

Marie Antoinette Inspired Shoes & Boots

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, October 07, 2011

Ooh la la - I am having a very decadent moment here in my office today, the sun is shining once more and my head is in Paris despite the rest of me being in Newcastle!

With the release of the new film, Melancholia, (can't wait to see it), I started thinking about Kirsten Dunst and then about Marie Antoinette and then onto Halloween costumes. And then to today's posts!

So I hope you will forgive this little touch of girlie Paris and enjoy my selections...

Now stay tuned for some of those free shabby chic graphics and printables I talked about on Facebook last week. I am designing some new things and they will be available here for download asap...
