Enlisting Some Help
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Thursday, January 19, 2012
Now that all of the demo and construction was finished it was time to do some painting. I was pretty much banned from the entire nursery project and being eight months pregnant I was totally okay with it. Plus, there was an unspoken agreement that even though I was not doing anything physical, I still had final say in anything decorative.
By this step, The Husband had done A LOT of work and was ready to ask for some help. Enter two Big Sisters and we had ourselves a painting party.

Carpentry Skills

So today is one of those days where I wish I was a better photographer because I don't really feel that the pictures included in this post do justice to the work completed by The Husband.
Yesterday I shared with you all of our before pictures as well as some pictures of the demo we had to do in order to get started on The Baby's room. Now I want you to take a look at the beautiful work The Husband did on the bead board ceiling, all of the new molding, and refinishing those great wide planked wood floors.
Remember way back when when I wrote a post referring to The Husband as The Electrician? Well now I think I will start referring to him as The Carpenter. Calling him The Carpenter also makes me feel a little safer, I never really was confident in all The Electrician did:)
Anyways, first up is the bead board ceiling. This is yet one more project that turned out to be much more difficult than originally predicted. Because of the size of the room it required three separate sheets of bead board and because no room in a 200 year old house is square the job also required about double the amount of measuring. Measure twice and cut once right? Plus there were no actual studs in the ceiling to nail the board into (again, the house is 200 years old) so we had to utilize the help of some liquid nail and a whole lot of nails. Thank goodness for the nail gun.
But once the nails were covered with wood filler, the molding was finished off, and the ceiling was painted - I don't think I could have imagined anything more beautiful!
Next order of business was that floor. Again, it is not a very big room so we were not hesitant to take on this project ourselves. Ha, Ha, do you like how I keep using the word "we"? To be honest, I had absolutely nothing to do with this part of the project. All kudos go to The Husband. So....door tarped, windows open in January and a brand new mask, The Husband got to work sanding. We really liked the natural color of the wood so decided not to stain it and just put a few coats of polyurethane on it instead. Add in some new base boards and, again, it is more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Making Room for Baby
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Tuesday, January 17, 2012
Alright, now that the Holidays are over it is time to start to get prepared for this little bundle of joy that will be joining us in six weeks. First order of business is to get The Kid's room ready....
But, as always, I have to fill you in on a little bit of a back story. When we first read the listing for Main Street House is was described as a three bedroom house. Cool - the house we were living in was three bedroom and that seemed to fit our family just fine, The Girls were even already sharing a room and they loved it so the play was just to have that third bedroom be a guest/play room.
Well, things aren't always what they seem. While technically this is a three bedroom house - the third bedroom measures 6 feet x 9 feet. Not necessarily big enough to be a bedroom and a guestroom. For the first 12 month we lived in Main Street House this 3rd Bedroom housed a bookshelf, two kid sized chairs and the dresser we used as our linen closet. The Girl's referred to this room at The Library. Over the past few months, that bookshelf and those chairs have been moved to the basement and we are now happy to call that room The Nursery.
Now, this room may be little but it has two huge windows in it so it actually feels a lot bigger than it is. Here is the first window. Oh, and check out that track lighting - pretty fancy huh?
A shot of window #2 so you can see the beautiful green molding and the nice clean white carpet.
Upon moving in we ripped out that ugly white carpet in hopes of finding beautiful hardwood floors, but we found this instead:

| What it the world??????? |
Okay, so that was the point where we initially stopped. We found a great area rug at IKEA, threw it on the floor moved the bookshelf in and called it a day.
That was until December 26th. This was when The Husband started really getting to work. First things first - DEMO the molding. After removing the carpet and the whatever flooring our baseboards ended up being about two inches off the floor so those had to go.

| Look at that fancy wallpaper we found behind the molding! |
This is the last room in Main Street House to receive a make-over and with every room we do we learn something new. What that means is that (usually) each room make-over is better than the one before it. I can definitely say that that is true for this room. But hey, it makes me feel better that the smallest room in the house is also the nicest.

Best Husband Ever!

Ahh, so we are back to the normal routines of life and I am finding that I am happy about that. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend but even-though we stayed in-town I feel like it just flew by and that I was exhausted the entire time. We went out with friends Wednesday night, celebrated Thanksgiving at my dad's on Thursday, ran errands and cared for a sick kid on Friday, I worked on Saturday and then we enjoyed a rainy football game on Sunday. Busy, busy, busy.
So you may have noticed that I said that I worked on Saturday but what did The Husband do? Only the best thing ever! He made-over the fireplace! I am sure by now you are sick of hearing be talk about this darn fireplace but I may just dedicate the entire week to how much I love my fireplace.
This unhealthy relationship I have with our fireplace dates all the way back to July 28, 2010 when I took a screwdriver to those awful hearts and pried them off. After that there was some sanding and some painting but I still wasn't in love.
Here is a picture of what the fireplace looked like up until Saturday morning:
Here is the fireplace that I am obsessed with and talk about all the time:
And here is my NEW FIREPLACE!!!!!

An amazing chic and liveable LA home makeover
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Thursday, October 27, 2011
This amazing makeover is the home of Lisa Ullmann, Executive Producer of The Ricky Gervais show. What started as an Echo Park "diamond in the rough," turned into a multifaceted top-quality gem. The interior design is by LA firm Jonamor Decor
Here are some before/after pics to show you the amazing transformation...
entry before
Entry after -- so chic!
The overall goal was to create a comfortable and relaxing environment that would reflect Lisa's many interests and styles and be welcoming for guests. Having a passion for travel, Lisa wanted to incorporate elements of some of her favorite places around the world that she had visited, specifically Italy, France and India. She wanted her home to be unique, elegant but also “user friendly”.
My favorite transformation - the living room
gorgeous - the jewel tones are really fresh
The dining room
The red is a bit too loud for me personally, but the room is still really intriguing, I like the wallpaper and the Moroccan lanterns
The master bedroom transformation
Many of the central pieces to each room were vintage or purchased at discount prices. Older furniture was re-painted and re-upholstered (a used Crate and Barrel desk painted black, an ottoman from a flea market covered in a funky Indian orange fabric). Lisa not only appreciated vintage items for their price and unique appearance, but felt that buying used items was a “greener” approach. Of all the newly purchased furniture, only the couch, a chair and a bench were “new” items.
What do you think of this home makeover?

Dresser Transformation
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Now that we are expecting another addition to our family, that means we need to find a new storage solution. You see, our home does not have a linen closet so we have been keeping all of our clean towels and sheets in a dresser in the "Library". In just a few short months that "Library" is going to become a nursery and the dresser is going to have to hold baby clothes instead of all of our extra linens.
Enter another project here at Main Street House. I have always wanted to try my hand at painting furniture and I thought that this might be the best time to try it. On one of our "date nights" The Husband and I decided to stop off at a second hand store to see what they had in inventory. I had tried Craigslist but the sellers were not being very cooperative so it was a second-hand store to the rescue.
That is where we found this beauty!! It had been put out on the showroom floor just the day before and was exactly what we were looking for. It needed a lot of work (the top was pretty damaged) but it was the exact size we were looking for.
We took it home, gave it a good cleaning, painted the hardware black and added some gray/blue paint to it and it is PERFECT!
I am so happy with how it came out and how perfect it fits in our upstairs hallway. It is also the perfect place to display all of our family photos.
Here is another view of it in its final resting place. I have a great picture I want to hang on the wall behind it but I still need to get it framed.

Decorating for Fall
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Tuesday, September 20, 2011
So, today it is warm and sunny but in the few days leading up to today it has been a bit overcast, rainy, and cool. Perfect weather to inspire some Fall redecoration. Now I don't want you to get too excited because all this really means is that I moved some home accessories around in two key display places in our home.
The first area I tackled was our hutch/buffet or whatever you want to call the cabinet in our Dining Room. This is the first thing you see when you walk into our house so it is fun to mix it up a little.
Here is the BEFORE picture all decorated for Summer:
Here is the AFTER picture all decorated for Fall.
And now we are moving onto the wall of double built-in shelves in our Front Room. These are kind of fun to redecorate and (to let my little secret out) the change of the seasons-hence the change of the decorations are the only 4 times a year that theses shelves get a really good dusting:)
Again, here is the BEFORE picture all decorated for Summer:
And the AFTER picture decorated for Fall:
As you can see, not everything gets taken down and somethings just get moved around but it was still fun to do.
I would like to direct your eye to the lower left hand corner of the picture below where you will see the new yarn wreath that I whipped together. Okay, maybe not whipped, more like obsessed over and neglected my children because of. This wreath was easy to make but took FOREVER to wrap. Am I admitting to being out of shape if I tell you my left shoulder muscle is sore from all the wrapping:)

There is a great tutorial over at The Lettered Cottage that I followed almost exactly. I wasn't sure what I wanted to use for the embellishments until I came across another great tutorial over at Pepper Design Blog where she explains how to make these great accordion paper flowers.
Are you doing anything fun to get your house ready for cooler weather???

What's Cookin'?
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Tuesday, August 23, 2011
So today we are going to take a look at our kitchen. The kitchen was actually the first room we decided to tackle in The House and I have to tell you that when we were 1/2 way through it I was fearful that we were never going to finish. It took A LOT of paint.
I was in charge of the cabinets where The Husband and The Father-in-Law tackled all of the wood paneling. There were two very frustrating things about the kitchen. 1) Black cabinets and wood trim = too many gallons of white paint 2) It all had to be done by hand.
By day three I was ready to be finished but there was NO WAY The Husband was going to let me cut any corners so we still had one more coat to finish before we could start putting everything back together again.
The funniest part is that when all is said and done, the kitchen will be totally gutted!! Everything will go except the fan. I love this fan:)
So what's the plan? Well first, the cabinets have to go. Although the coat(s) of white paint made them look better they are not pretty. Here is where good ol' IKEA enters. We have the cabinets picked out and the butcher block counter tops, even the farmhouse sink just sitting and waiting for us to come purchase them. Why haven't we yet? Well, because before we do that we are going to have to replace the flooring. Easy enough - except for the fact that the floor is really uneven so we will need a trusty contractor to come in and help us fix that. I would love to put brick floors in, when we are ready - but I have absolutely no idea how much that will cost.
The other thing we have to do is fix the window behind the sink. I don't know if you can tell from the picture but whoever re-did our kitchen, they put the sink cabinet right in front of the window so if you are looking in from the outside you can see 8 inches of the back of our sink (just one of the many "what were they thinking" moments we have had since moving into The House). So, we would need to turn that into a 1/2 window and board/brick up the rest of the opening.
Other things on my to-do list:
Add a dishwasher were the cabinets are to the left of the sink
Replace the microwave cart with a true cabinet
Keep the open shelving but replace the metal bracket with wooden ones
Get a new fridge, and maybe a new oven with a hood
Find a way to incorporate Subway Tile into the kitchen - I love Subway Tile!
Add an island
Now, after telling you all of that I do want to say that I love my kitchen! I don't know why because, obviously, there is a lot I want to change about it but it just feels so homey to me. I love that it is little and that you can't crowd a whole lot of people in it. I love the presence of the kids in the kitchen, from their lunch boxes laying around to their artwork on the fridge even the pet fish courtesy of the fair we went to this past weekend. It really is one of my favorite rooms in the house.

Come On In
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Friday, August 19, 2011
Now that you have seen the outside of The Main Street House, why don't you come on in and check out the inside.
The first room you enter when walking through the side entryway is our dining room. Well, we call it the dining room but it is also the office and the playroom.
I debated about staging the room to make it look extra nice but then I decided that I want to show you all how we actually live so you will see some things in here that may not look like they belong. (i.e. dog, backpacks, Handy Manny tool bench, etc.)
There was a lot of work to be done to this room before we moved in. You can see from the pictures below that we ripped up the carpeting to expose the wood floors. We also took down some of the random stuff like the old doorbell and the cornice boards. Finally, we painted. In fact, we painted a lot! I don't know whose decision was worse, the previous owners decision to paint all the trim black or our decision to paint it white. We also added new crown molding and a new light fixture. Finally, I think the biggest impact can be seen in the third set of pictures where you can take a look at the french doors and the basement door that the Father-in-Law so painstakingly stripped and refinished for us.
There is still a lot of work to be done in this room. I don't know if you can tell by any of the pictures but this room has an old tile ceiling that I would love to replace - maybe with some sort of tin ceiling. We also need to refinish the floors but my biggest fear is that someone is going to tell us that we actually need to replace the floors. Finally, I don't know if you can see the weird wood paneling on the walls but that is actually old barn siding that I would love to rip off and replace with a great board and batten wall treatment.
But what we have done so far has made me pretty happy. Here is a little closer look at the pieces/parts of the room.
The first area is my work spaces where I write to you all on most days. Because this is an entryway it was kind of important to us to find a desk where we could close everything up when we were finished with it. Enter this great desk that we found at Wal-Mart. Yes, you heard me correctly, we got this at Wal-Mart! I was just as surprised as you but it was a perfect fit. The chair is just an extra we had from our table but I love this pillow from Nena Von and the yellow matched perfectly with the yellow in the rug under our dining table. I also love our little "L" that is sitting atop the desk. I am not a huge monogram/initial kind of person but I think this fits so nicely there (that an it is from the $1 bin at Michael's). And the icing on the cake - the two Sea Urchin Tidepool shadowboxes I have been in love with for three years and finally decided to treat myself to this past spring.
Moving on to the hutch area - I don't want you to be fooled into thinking that this hutch hides all of my fine china because in fact it holds a whole bunch of toys. Inside these doors you will find some art supplies, a whole lot of Disney Princess stuff, squinkies, Mr. Potato Heads and a whole other world of primary colored plastic things. This hutch also came from Wal-Mart and once again I cannot tell you how perfect it is for the space. The styling idea I stole from Kelly over at The Polished Pebble. Although, it doesn't look quite as good as hers - I am pretty happy with it. I nearly flipped when I found the burlap drum shades a Target because they were just the finishing touch I was looking for.
And finally, this is where we eat. The table is nothing special and is pretty beat-up but there is absolutely no reason to replace any furniture when you have a 3yr old and a 6yr old in the house. Especially the kitchen table - a whole lot of playing goes on here:) I would also like to direct your attention the the bamboo shades you see hanging in the background. I love, love, love these! Living on Main Street we get a whole lot of foot traffic and I have had a hard time transitioning from a wooded cul-de-sac lot to this house - let me just say that our blinds were closed a lot! I like that these are semi-transparent so that even when the blinds are closed, I feel like I have my privacy but am not completely closed off from the world. Plus, those were just one more thing we got from my favorite Lowe's store, along with the curtains you see and the rug under the table. Finally, the real reason I took this picture was to show off my amber glass pitcher and tumblers. I am obsessed with amber glass and will swipe it up anywhere I see it, no matter if I need the item or not. This pitcher was on of the first amber glass items I bought and I love it!

Finally!!!!
Posted by MAKMU ta
On Tuesday, July 26, 2011
Yep, that's right - FINALLY - you all can stop listening to me whine about this Master Bedroom project and we can move onto something else. The "before" pics you will see below were taken before we moved in so there were some improvements done before this painting project.
So, the first things that were done go something like this:
We ripped out the smelly blue carpeting
Ripped down the weird brown molding and put up some much nicer crown molding.
We took down and replaced the old blinds - we also removed the weird cornice boards they installed
Finally, we took down the death trap of a fan and replaced it with the Calypso light from IKEA
So, what did we do this time that took so long? I'm not really sure:)
Day One: Taping and Priming the trim
Day 2: Prep work like taking everything off the walls, changing out electrical sockets, etc.
Day 3: First coat of trim paint
Day 4: 2nd Coat of Trim Paint and rehanging the blinds
Day 5: Touch-up on the Trim Paint
Day 6: Taping and first coat of wall paint
Day 7: 2nd Coat of Wall Paint and touch-up
Day 8-10: Took a mini-vacation to Lake Cumberland, KY
Day 10 evening: Major kudos to the Husband because he did all of Day 10 on his own and it went something like this:
the ceiling
Rehang Light Fixture
Put in new air vent cover
Put all outlet covers back on
Rehang Bedroom Door, Bathroom Door, and Closet Doors
Install new transition plate between the bedroom and the bathroom
Rehang everything in bathroom

So, the first things that were done go something like this:
We ripped out the smelly blue carpeting
