Savor the Moment: Orange + Yellow

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, November 14, 2011

This weekend I was driving home from studying for a few hours at my favorite tea shop. I was Oooh-ing and Aww-ing over the streets lined with gorgeous Fall colors. I remembered my camera was in my car, so I hopped out a snapped some pictures to savor the moment. It's a good idea do to that sometimes- savor special moments filled with color and inspiration- because you'll never be in that moment again.

I was so inspired that I came home and made a collage of interiors full of orange and yellow...
for the home: orange and yellow

I'll be so sad to see the leaves completely fall of the trees!
Have the leaves changed in your city? How do you feel about orange and yellow in your home?
Happy Monday, friends! Remember to take time out of your day to savor a special moment (:

PS. Meet my newest sponsor, La Belle & Le Bentley. Lisa is one sweet girl with one very {little!} and adorable dog, Bentley. You'll want a little pup for yourself when you see Bentley in his yellow rain coat!  Melts my heart (:
Stop by and see what this fellow Seattle girl is up to...oh, and wish her a happy birthday!

Fall Cleaning Tips

Posted by MAKMU ta On Thursday, November 10, 2011

Fall is here.  Decorating has begun for the holidays but we must also consider the maintenance of our homes.  I know we all have heard of spring cleaning but maybe not so much of fall cleaning.  The weather is cooling off and we have to make sure our homes can handle the weather changes.  I've made a checklist to get your home in order for the cooler temperatures.

Outside

* Wash windows.

* Change exterior light bulbs.

* Clean out gutters.

* Have your chimney cleaned and inspected.

* Check seals around windows and doors.

* Finish any exterior repairs and maintenance.

* Clean and store patio furniture and children's outside toys.

* Drain and store garden hoses.

Inside
* Wash windows.
* Remove all summer decor and accessories.
* Have your furnace checked out and serviced as needed.   Buy a supply of furnace filters.

* Have upholstery and carpet cleaned to get rid of sand and pollen that was tracked in during the summer months.

* Test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors and change batteries as needed.

* Vacuum window treatments, window sills, baseboards, and furniture.

* Clean and organize kitchen cabinets.  Holiday entertaining is fast approaching.

Is your home ready for the change?

Autumn

This autumn has literally fallen over me, too fast, too unexpected. I know, I know, you might say, how is this possible? Halloween is just around the corner? Monday Musings

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, October 17, 2011

I left you Friday with a post about a big old oak tree
in danger of being cut down --
a tree that is half on our property.  Click here for that post.

Update:  We visited the neighbors on Saturday morning and
they apologized for not letting us know their plans. It was a cordial chat.

Howard and I have hired a certified arborist who will be here Tuesday morning to take a look at this big oak,
and give an unbiased opinion on its condition.  We'll see what happens from there.
Fingers crossed for Old Man Oak.
******************************************************
As always, I am trying to get used to the days closing down earlier.
 To lighting candles and Jack O'Lanterns by 7:00 in the evening.
It surprises me every year, the shortening of the days.
I never see it coming.

Do you like the short days of winter that end in long cozy evenings,
or the long light summer days and their soft warm nights?

I like the long days.
But Fall has its advantages; you can't beat the decorating possibilities!
 The colors go so well with our dog, Dion.  :-)

On Tuesday, I'm opening a box of goodies from a giveaway I won.
Join me to see what's inside.  I'll be right here, because:

Also tomorrow, the arborist comes, and there will be more work
on the French drains in our cellar.
It's July redux at That Old House as the jack-hammering starts again.
I may never get all the boxes out of our front hall.
Can they be a decorating statement?  -- Cass

Halloween inspired interiors -great ideas and inspiration

Posted by MAKMU ta On Thursday, October 13, 2011

Because I haven't lived anywhere with any real storage yet, I don't really have much in the way of decor. I still like to look at holiday homes though..and I think the ones below are all completely doable decorations!

I don't know how safe it is to put candles on the floor.  Either go the flameless route, or make sure there are no kids/pets that could knock them over.

so cute!

This table scape is seasonal but still sophisticated...

Creating a Fall Table

Posted by MAKMU ta On Tuesday, October 11, 2011

This is for you that may have missed my fall table over at Bear Rabbit Bear this weekend for Fall Project Week.

Currently my dining room isn't finished but I won't let that minor detail stop me from setting the table.  The color theme in the downstairs of my home are blues, browns, and tans.  I like the traditional fall colors, but I thought the reds and oranges would clash with my other decor.  The dining room is at the front of the house so everyone sees it before going into the family room.

To start are some simple pieces I got at Target, my favorite store besides Home Depot.  I bought tan placemats, white plates, and blue napkins with a floral design.  The stemware and flatware were wedding gifts.  We've never used them.  I guess I'm waiting on a big dinner party to pull 'em out.

The bowl and decorative balls are from Garden Ridge.

I bought some pumpkins from the Dollar Tree and painted them white and blue.

Also on the table are my Williams Sonoma inspired glass hurricanes.  I like them better here on the table.  Who doesn't like eating by candlelight?

I filled in the spaces with some leftover pieces from my faux leaf garland from the Dollar Tree and vine garland balls.

I love how everything turned out.

Are you more traditional or modern when it comes to your fall decor?
