Going somewhere..

Posted by MAKMU ta On Wednesday, March 28, 2012

I saw these and was immediately in love- this is some amazing talent!

I have a presentation today and then it is back to the ordering grind for ongoing projects.  I wish I felt like I was moving forward but I am not sure if I am really getting anywhere anymore.

Tomorrow I will share with you a little bit of what I have been up to and I am hoping to get to share some great new books that I have discovered too!

Wishing you a lovely Wednesday.

A Basement Series...Really?

Posted by MAKMU ta On Monday, November 21, 2011

Today is cold, and clearly the early stages of winter. I am missing gardening. It reminds me of my very first post, gardening in my mind. That's the strange fun thing about blogging, you can see if you actually finished started any of your projects, or if you have stumble across a better idea! I know that I am constantly changing my vision...only to find, that usually, I still LOVE my original inspiration. Sound familiar?

If there is one project area of my home that needs immediate attention, it would be my basement. My basement is small but super functional....it is the sewing/craft room....video game/friends over room....fort making/puzzle building room......etc.....This last Spring, our basement flooded! It was the second time in 12 years. Time to install a drainage system with a sump pump

Obviously, this was done by a professional crew

The built-in's that I installed a few years ago were spared because I built them on a 2x4 platform off the concrete floor, everything else....was wet

A couple of months ago, I started lining up my "Inside ideas" pictures to help keep myself busy so winter would feel like it was moving faster! For self motivation, I have decided to invite you into my basement. Since my upholstery project will be finished soon....I will try to keep my basement project moving along by posting weekly updates (it forces me to stay on track).

Do you have a room in your home that you close the door and avoid at all costs?

Dark grey and white

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, November 11, 2011

The contrast here is so perfect!  I have been leaning towards softer greys as of late and this just brings me back to the dark with a lot of contrast.  The details in the mantel and the door paneling are so perfect.  Sometimes I wish I lived in a home with such history and detail.  But it is not meant to be right now.

Someday maybe.

I am looking forward to the weekend it is supposed to rain a bit here so another few days of relaxation I hope.  I am starting to read Gone with the Wind for the first time and I am hoping it will entertain me for the weekend.  Have you read it?  What did you think?  I know it is a classic and I had to pick it up when I saw it the other day.

Next week I have a lot coming up here on the blog, another giveaway and some great pics to post!

Have a wonderful day!  It is 11/11/11 so cool!!!!

grey and gold..

Posted by MAKMU ta On Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Grey and gold is one of my new favorite color combos!  I must be all about color this week, I am working on several projects and after a little break over the weekend from the computer I am recharged with creative energy and ready to design.
I love love the stairs and that kitchen oh my!!!  The pendant light is new in the shop and the fabulous vintage mirror and urns are from Atelier de Campagne!!  All so fun and they would be great inspiration for a home or a single room.

making an entrance

Posted by MAKMU ta On Thursday, October 06, 2011

I love that even the smallest of spaces can be made into an entry, just a little place to greet guests and show a little peek into what is beyond in your home.  The perfect little spot to drop your keys or keep your purse.

Grey stair risers

Posted by MAKMU ta On Tuesday, October 04, 2011

The wonderful things we can do with a little paint.  I love love these stairs!  I am not sure if the entire stair was once grey and has just worn away on the treads or not but is a very cool look.   This is also showing me how putting color on the details in a space instead of the walls can be a great way to go!

grey steps

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, August 19, 2011

This is a fun mix with the grey painted stair treads and the rustic wood.  I love how it all plays off of the clean white wood work.

It has been a busy week here, I am glad to see Friday has finally arrived!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Refinishing Basement Stairs

Posted by MAKMU ta On Friday, July 15, 2011

I love power tools! I am currently in the process of refinishing the basement stairs. My goal is to have a beautiful runner down the center of the stairs, and have exposed wood on both sides.

before

I have had my electric sander for 10++ years.

...it's time to move on. I will miss her!

On a recent trip to Home Depot, I felt like this

When I saw this

I knew this was the one.

First, it has a dust bag attached.
Second, the square corners will get into those tight corners like this

and finally, the replacement papers are MUCH cheaper!

Here are my tips......

1) Save the manicure

These are no ordinary gloves. They are the kind my hairdresser uses when she puts my natural color back on my head. I buy them from a beauty supply store. They are twice as expensive as the clear ones you find everywhere, but well worth the investment!

2) Load the sandpaper from the back first. It is much easier to wrap it over the front to finish

3) Make perforations in the paper to allow the dust bag to work properly

The case has a template you press the paper on

and get this

 4) Wear a mask

This is my preference. I also use it for spray painting.

That's it! When I was at Home Depot, a couple came in looking for a sander for "the wife" I gave them a quick tutorial on this one, and they bought it.....Hey Home Depot, I want a commission.

.....Oh, one last tip. Be sure to cover your smoke detector when you do a lot of indoor sanding, or you will have a visit from

Hope this was helpful.
