DIY Tile Coasters
I've seen this project in many places but decided to give it a try.
Supplies used:
4" x 4" tiles
scrapbook paper
mod podge
1 inch foam brush
Polycrylic
sheet of felt
My tiles are 4" x 4" so I started by cutting my paper into 3.75" x 3.75" squares.
Apply a later of Mod Podge on the face of the tile.
Center the paper in the middle and coat with one layer of Mod Podge. Allow this layer to dry for 15 minutes and do a second coat. My first layer went west to east and my second layer went north to south. This creates a grid looking pattern when the Mod Podge dries.
I wanted to make sure my tiles were really sealed and waterproof. I had some Polycrylic in my stash and gave the tiles one coat. It also gives the tile a shine.
After the tiles dried, I applied a 3.75" x 3.75" piece of felt to the back of each tile with glue. Don't want to scratch up my table.
Now I have some decorative coasters that match my color scheme. I could easily do another set to match the room if it changes (not likely right?). These would also be good gifts.

Little grey bath

Tiling a Kitchen Back Splash
There are many tutorials out there for tiling a back splash. We actually learned a lot from this video and watching countless hours of HGTV and DIY Network. Here's the rundown on how we tiled our kitchen.
Supplies we used:
1x2 mosaic tiles
1x1 mosaic tiles for filling in gaps along edges and corners
tile adhesive (we used pre-mixed)
notched trowel
spacers
rubber float
glass tile nippers
grout
sponge and bucket
grout sealer
grout caulk to match your grout
We started by making sure the wall was clean and dry.
Using the notched trowel, apply the adhesive to the wall and remove excess using the notches on the edges.
Press on one sheet of tiles at a time. You want to use spacers between the tiles and top of countertop. Two hard surfaces should never meet because of expansion and contraction.
Press firmly against the face of the tiles with the rubber float to make sure the tiles are adhered to the wall.
Continue to lay the tile sheets until your walls are covered.
We used 1x2 tiles so they look like bricks when put together. There were one inch spaces along the edges and in the corners where there was no tile. We bought an additional sheet of 1x1 tiles to fill in these spaces. Lowes carried our tile pattern in both sizes so that saved us some cuts.
Around the outlets, we did have to make some cuts. For this we bought a glass tile nipper. It easily chipped of small pieces of the tile to get the size we needed.
If you want to get the outlet covers back on, make sure to tile around the opening. Place the ears of the socket on the tile if you can. You may need to loosen the screws in order to do this.
After the tiles set for 24 hours, you can grout. We bought the powdered stuff and mixed it ourselves. According to the video, it should be the consistency of peanut butter.
After it sets for 10 minutes, take a wet sponge and remove the leftover grout. This cleans the tile and prevents the grout from hardening on your tiles. You want to the sponge to be wet but not dripping so try to squeeze as much water out as possible. You will have to keep cleaning your sponge so keep a bucket of water.
Allow the grout to set for 24 hours. The tiles will have a haze on them so wipe with a wet sponge. I used a dry cleaning cloth after cleaning with water to dry the tiles and make them shine.
After the grout is set, spray with a grout sealer. This prevents your tiles from staining during use. This is a kitchen you know.
Use the caulk to seal the space between the countertop and tiles. I also used a bead of caulk around the outside edge of the tiles to give them a finished look.
This project definitely was not something we could do quickly. You cannot move on to the next step until the previous one is done. All the work was definitely worth it. Our kitchen looks better with a back splash.

Kitchen Back Splash Done
I've been wanting to show you guys all week but since I don't get home until after dark, it was hard to get some decent pictures. Here goes.
The tiles are grey, brown, tan, and white. Hubby chose this one. I was leaning more towards a neutral tan and white set but glad we chose this one instead. It pops more and has a good mix of colors that will go good with the future dark cabinets. The back splash will pop out instead of blending in.
I picked up a few faux plants and pots from Ikea.
I was finally able to find some stainless containers to match the rest of the kitchen appliances at Target.

Kitchen Tiling This Weekend
We tiled the back splash. It already looks ten times better in the kitchen. Just the beginning of the kitchen transformation.
We grouted last night and we still need to finish some touch ups, so hopefully I'll have the finished pictures for you soon.

Master bath dreams..
So I have been contemplating for months - what am I going to do with my master bath?? With work being so busy I have been putting off the planning and I had stopped searching but really we were at the point where it could not wait any longer! So finally a few weeks ago I found a few hours to work on my bathroom, I took a quick trip to Walker Zanger in search of the perfect tile for the shower as it had been eluding me for months!!! We have an existing marble floor that we put in just a few years ago and my tastes have changed so much since then so it was hard to decide what I wanted.
Finally I thought I had it all figured out and when I went to order it today it completely destroyed my budget- back to the drawing board I am afraid.
The picture above is my dream cabinet, but this also is not in my budget and not in my color scheme thanks to the floor. I will share our progress as it becomes available, which will be very soon considering my hubby is almost done pulling out all of the old tile and the new tile has to be started next week!

Primer, Grout, and Draperies OUT
We're busy here at That Old House.
It is just 12 days until our daughter's wedding.
The reception won't be here at the house, but the After Party will be.

Although if you looked at the house today,
you might think otherwise:
That's Danny, painter extraordinaire, starting to prime the old clapboards.
(Me 'n Danny, we love that oily smell.)
He was kneeling in the grass; he may have been praying.
This is one big project to finish in a week, even with a crew of four.
It took one or two workers 3 days to scrape loose paint off the house, and they're still doing that on the other side.

Luckily, no one expects 182-year old siding to be perfectly smooth. Certainly not me. (I?)
Inside the house, it's my show.
Howard took down the dining room draperies for me last night; I'll turn their fabric into seat covers
for our oddball collection of dining room chairs, and hang something new at the windows in the next day or so.
It's funny, but the room seems smaller without the drapery panels.
Why is that?

Well who knew -- certainly not I -- that dirt-colored tile grout looks unnervingly like chocolate mousse?
