Spring is already in full bloom at Canada Post, with today's issuing of a pair of PERMANENT™ stamps featuring two vibrant Canadian African violet (Saintpaulia) hybrids, "Picasso" and "Decelles' Avalanche." The Saintpaulia genus has more than 1,000 hybrids developed and registered by Canadians. "These stamps become a spring tradition for us at Canada Post," says Jim Phillips, Canada Post's Director of Stamp Services. "Since 2004, we've sold more than 45 million stamps featuring Canadian flowers." Previous issues have featured lilacs, peonies and rhododendrons.
Picasso, hybridized by Michel Tremblay, is a heavy bloomer with double flowers that are violet above and white below, with some variable white fantasy. In the violet world, "fantasy" refers to the lines or dots on a flower's petals. Decelles' Avalanche was named after its hybridizer, Yvon Decelles. The flower has red-fuchsia star blooms and medium green and cream foliage. Photographs were taken by stamp designer Isabelle Toussaint at the Montréal Botanical Garden in April 2009.
