Die ersten schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen über Dahlien verdanken wir dem spanischen Arzt Francisco Hernandez vom Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts .
1791 dann sandte Vincente Cervantes vom Botanischen Garten Mexiko-Stadt Dahlien-Samen nach Madrid zu Antonio José Cavanilles, damals Mitarbeiter und später Direktor des Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid. Noch im selben Jahr blühte die Pflanze und anhand von Dahlia pinnata
wurde die Gattung von Cavanilles erstbeschrieben,
der Name der Gattung ehrt den schwedischen Botaniker Andreas Dahl. Etwas später dann beschrieb Cavanilles noch zwei weitere Arten, nämlich Dahlia rosea und Dahlia coccinea.
Ein späteres Synonym für die Gattung ist
Georgia benannt nach Johann Gottlieb Georgi, St. Petersburg, Russland.
Irrtümlich von Willdenow vergeben, hielt sich die Bezeichnung in züchterischen Kreisen lange und ist bis in die Gegenwart in Skandinavien und Osteuropa als Trivialname für die Dahlien geläufig.

Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, perennial plants native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. There are at least 36 species of dahlia. Dahlia hybrids are commonly grown as garden plants. The Aztecs gathered and cultivated the dahlia for food, ceremonies, as well as decorative purposes, and the long woody stem of one variety was used for small pipes. The dahlia is named after Swedish 18th-century botanist Anders Dahl.

My new Canna plants "Richard Wallace" and "Wyoming" tubers will be planted in May in large containers and bloom all summer long on our deck. Welcoming our Hummingbirds !! I love the tropical-looking flowers with bright red, pink, orange or yellow flowers.
