Mexican Cigar Plant - Cuphea ignea - Zigarettenblümchen, Köcherblümchen, Weiderichgewächs - Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Please take another look at my new plant and the cute little hummingbird.

I planted a garden for butterflies, bees and other insects.

“Bless the flowers and the weeds, my birds and bees”

The hummingbirds find their feeders very quickly and visiting the garden every day.

First sighting of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeding on the new plant.

I am delighted!!

Mexican Cigar Plant - Cuphea ignea

So named because the orange red tubular flowers with their ashen end look like tiny lit cigars.
Whilst perennial, it is frost tender so either needs to be grown in the garden as an annual where it will flower almost continually until the first frosts knock it down - or lifted from the garden and grown on as a houseplant for the Winter where it will continue to flower and please.
In the garden border it can easily produce a shrubby plant up to 3 feet tall within a couple of months. In a container or pot it can be pruned and maintained at around 8" tall or more.
Can easily be propagated from cuttings or by saving seed.
Prefers a well drained soil - and once established will tolerate drought conditions.
Thrives in full sun.
Bees and other beneficial insects absolutely love the flowers of Cigar plants as well as hummingbirds.

Cuphea ignea. Köcherblümchen. Weiderichgewächs.
In Deutschland meistens einjährig.
Boden humos, locker, feucht. Standort Sonne/Halbschatten, vor Prallsonne und Winde schützen. Er breitet sich nach allen Seiten schnell aus. Aussaat bei Jahresbeginn, die Jungpflanzenspitze einmal kupieren, damit sie buschiger wachsen, danach im Mai auspflanzen. Blühbeginn etwa 4 - 5 Monate nach der Aussaat, dann aber dauerblühend. Höhe bis 40 cm, einige Arten werden in Mexiko 1 m hoch. Blütenfarbe meistens rot, aber auch gelblich, die Röhrenblüte ist schmal und langgestreckt, mehrere schmale Zentimeter lang, mit dunklem Ende und weißer Spitze. Verblühtes sofort entfernen. Alle 10 - 14 Tage düngen und Boden ausreichend feucht halten.
Die roten blüten zieht Bienen, Hummeln und Kolibris an...sum sum sum:)
