Tasha Tudor
What can be said about an
extraordinary woman who
lived in our time, yet lived
as if in another time?
“I think I’ve done a good job of Life”
Tasha said of herself in the 1992 issue.
I believe that it was through Victoria
that I experienced my first encounter with
Tasha Tudor.
This beautiful, slight woman, “clad in sweeping
Skirts, children’s book author and illustrator
Tasha Tudor lives and works by candlelight,
attends to her animals, stokes a wood stove,
gathers fruit from her pear tree, as season
and time demands”.
Victoria magazine noted that Tasha raised
four children supporting them through
her books and illustrations. Tasha purchased
her home in Vermont determined to “live
the old ways, convinced that I lived before,
in the 1830’s. Everything comes so easily
to me from that period, of that time:
threading a loom, growing flax, spinning
milking a cow”.
Tasha’s adoration for her beloved
Corgi is well known – illustrated in her
books and artwork.
“When I’m alone I can be completely myself. I can tell
the cats what’s on my mind, and when they’re
recalcitrant, I can tell the goats exactly what I think
of them and no one can hear me. I enjoy solitude. It’s probably
selfish, but why bother about it…Life isn’t long
enough to do all you could accomplish. And what a privilege
even to be alive. In spite of all the pollutions and horrors,
how beautiful this world is. Supposing you only saw the stars once a year.
Think what you would think. The wonder of it”.
I believe Tasha’s own words best describe the
exceptional woman that she was.
ddddddddddddddddddddddd
I remain in awe of Tasha Tudor. Inspired.
She was right – living is a privilege –
What a wonderful privilege to have had
Tasha Tudor share her private world with us.
Oh, that there were more of her spirit today.
