Touches of Lace

Cottage and Lace
and doilies

Every morning when I look out my kitchen window from my desk,
I look at a world through lace. My view seems softened, enchanted
when I see the birds, the trees, the flowers through woven swirls of
leaf and roses.

I wonder at the beginning of lace...those who
made it by hand, then by machine.

I was overjoyed last week to find these delicate battenburg placemats
and napkins at  a nearby Goodwill.

Would I ever part with something so delicate and lovely.
Not ever, but I am so thankful to the one who did.

I have lace for windows, for dining tables, for sidetables -
and for chairs.

If I could, I'd envelop each room in lace to soften and to
enchant.

I was curious about the history behind Battenburg lace
and was not disappointed in its story.

In late the 1800's Battenburg lace was first created when
Queen Victoria of England named her son-in-law as the
first Duke of Battenburg. It is recorded that every
English Duke had his own lace pattern.
Battenburg lace is made from looped tape lace
then decorative stitches fill in called bars or brides.

Lace of all types is very romantic, it is very cottage.
