Artists and Poets

John Lavery

I was looking for images to represent a feel I wanted to express in my March blog header. I explored art depicting springtime. Then I thought to search for Irish artists, perhaps Irish Impressionists. Then I came across the work of John Lavery. His portrait entitled

"Spring"  was to me the perfect image .
I then searched for poetry to be included in the blog header. I searched among the well known "Irish Blessings". I came across what I thought was the perfect one to include - giving the sentiments I wanted to portray.

I added a photo of a Springtime path in a nearby Arboretum.
To complete the feel, I changed some of the music added to the blog to those that to me gently portray a love of Ireland.
My dad instilled within me a love for a land I've never been to, but one that holds deep meaning in my heart.

The history of the Irish people is quite wonderful. John Lavery was commissioned to paint an image of a Cailin for the Irish National tender.

The image was to be associated with Yeat's heroine, Cathleen ni Houlihan - the embodiment of the strength of the Irish people during her struggles.

Lavery chose his wife Hazel known then for her beauty and poise, who was featured in some 400 of his work.

Lavery and his wife became very interested in helping Ireland's people and at one time gave use of their home for negotiations. Lavery was also commissioned to paint Michael Collins -a national hero of Ireland - whom the Lavery's knew.

From one search for a springtime photo, I found profound information on an artist, of whom I am now become quite fond of his work.

This one's for you Daddy, my Danny-Boy - I love you and miss you
