Enchanting the Woods

Wisteria

Have you ever been so enchanted by a flower? Here in the south at the beginning of spring an captivating flower can be seen draping from trees, poles and fence posts along the roadways.

I see this lovely vine growing along roadways and in the woods near my home. The beautiful lavender flowers gracefully hang like bunches of grapes from these vines cloaking trees and fences.

There's something ethereal about these blossoms - whenever I see them I whisper their name, 'Wisteria'. The fragrance of these flowers is very romantic  -

light, fresh and floral;  quite lovely. In the evening after a warm day the air is filled with the fragrance of the Jasmine and of the Wisteria causing one to wish to savor the moment and to linger.  I have picked some and have placed small bouquets along with delicate pink Azalea and Spirea in several rooms filling my home with  this wonderful fragrance -

more pleasant than any air freshener.

Wisteria can be added to your garden. The Japanese , Chinese and some native varieties are very invasive by large seed pods and by suckers running underground. Nurseries do provide grafted varieties  - some are not as fragrant as others - a highly recommended variety is Blue Moon.

If you pick Wisteria from a roadway, I have been told it may take several years for it to bloom- but beware of the natural tendency for this plant to grow wildly.

I am sharing this post with Beverly's Pink Saturday
