Adding Whimsy

A Garden Visitor

A while back I shared with you my admiration for a book about a home enveloped in a story – a whimsical story told through tromp l’oiel.
Throughout this house  were images that told the story of Delphine.

The Illustrated Cottage was a
dream fulfilled for Nina Williams.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the story and the lovely Delphine that I have invited her to my garden to visit.

Where you can find Delphine is in an odd – out of the way place.

I have painted her strolling through our garden on the inside door to what we – tongue in cheek call our Indoor Outhouse.

On the side porch of our 1914 Craftsman house is a very small bathroom – just big enough for the toilet.
There’s also a sink on the porch alongside a side stairwell that leads to the upstairs. We surmise that this was the way allowed for the servants to travel from the kitchen to the upstairs without disturbing the former owners.
It is purely a guess.

I wanted to make this spot interesting – with its high ceilings and narrow space I put wallpaper giving the impression of an outdoor room. And stenciled grapevines climbing over the top of the walls.

But, I also hung a lovely piece of artwork, a gift to me years back from my mother.

On the inside of the door you’ll find my
tromp l’oiel
of
Delphine strolling through our gardens.

I hope to add more interesting images throughout my home – not so much to the extent of Nina – but… well who knows?

Do you add touches of whimsy to your home?

I do appreciate your visit.
