Faux Mercury Glass is everywhere! I have walked the aisles of several stores and in their Christmaswares – are several examples of beautiful
Faux Mercury Glass.
I have enjoyed making Faux Mercury Glass objects with
Looking-Glass Paint.
It is hard for some to find.
I have used
Chrome paint – with good success.
The appeal to Looking-Glass paint is the translucent quality.
Chrome paint comes close.
I saw Rostoleum’s Metallic Silver in Home Depot this past
weekend and thought I’d give it a try – for a project I had floating in my imagination.
I wanted to make – Frosted – Glittered Faux Mercury glass.
I am pleased with the results.
It is easy and is relatively quick.
You will need:

Rostoleum Metallic – Silver spray paint
Rostoleum Frosted Glass Spray paint
Spray Adhesive
Martha Stewart Crafts – Mica Flake Glitter
Grocery store plastic bags
Blue painter’s tape
Clear glass vase, hurricane top – votive – anything
Wide-mouthed.

1. Tape plastic bag to the outside of the glass object, just covering the top edge.
(you can peek at your progress without removing tape)
2. spray Metallic – Silver paint (following instructions on can) in short quick strokes on the inside of the glass object. This paint covers quickly and very well – it looks a bit dull – but that will be covered by the frosting.
3. Allow to dry.
4. Bunch plastic bags into the mouth of the glass objects – to protect the inside from the Frosted glass paint.
5. Following can instructions spray 2 coats of the frosted glass on the outside of the glass object.
6. Allow to dry
7. Lay a plastic back on the floor surface – I did this outside. Lay the glass object on its side spray thoroughly with adhesive. Sprinkle mica flake glitter giving good coverage over the spray adhesive.
8. Allow to dry.
9. Turn the object over and follow step 7.
10. Allow to dry
11. There will be small gaps between the first coatings of glitter. Apply spray adhesive and glitter to the bare spots following step 7 –
12. Allow to dry completely – I found the inside of the hurricane vase was still wet and the plastic bag had created a pattern –happy unintentional consequence!
13. I put a glass votive candle into the vase instead of a bare candle, just to be sure it would be safe.
